Moroccan Azilal rugs

Up to 1990, the Moroccan kelim rug from the Azilal region in the stony, barren and difficult to reach high regions of the Atlas Mountains was a secret, an undiscovered treasure. No one below the mountains knew about the artworks that would come to be named the Ourika or Azilal rug. 25 years later, the amount of attention is different ...

The Moroccan Azilal rug is rare and ...

... in the art world, extremely exhibited. In galleries in Paris, Tokyo and the USA, the Azilal rug is exhibited as a pure work of art. The Azilal rug, in exactly the same way as other noted Moroccan rugs such as the Beni Ourain, is woven by the women of the region. And, in exactly the same way as the Beni Ourain rugs, the women in the Azilal region weave the rugs from their own life experiences. The symbols that are found most often on the rugs are motherhood, childbirth and marriage. Symbols for good fortune and prosperity are also common. The rugs are made from wool from the sheep that wander the Azilal region. The strong and beautiful colours that decorate the Azilal rugs are natural and originate from plants and berries to be found in the region.

All Azilal rugs are unique.

No Azilal rug is like another, they are not woven for commercial purposes and do not follow any given pattern. Trendcarpet photographs all the rugs we stock from Morocco.
